Booking morphology scans: windows by trimester

“Book the morphology scan” only makes sense once you know the trimester — they are different appointments¹².

Three trimesters, three windows

• 1st trimester (weeks 11–14): early morphology, dating, nuchal translucency (NT) when offered — Early pregnancy ultrasound.

• 2nd trimester (weeks 18–24): detailed fetal anatomy — Anatomy scan overview and the five-step series below.

• 3rd trimester (if ordered): growth, placenta, or targeted follow-up — Prenatal exam calendar.

Book 1st-trimester morphology (weeks 11–14)

First-trimester ultrasound for dating is recommended¹; nuchal translucency (NT) may be included when offered².

Before booking (1st trimester)

1. Get a written referral naming the 1st trimester.

2. Bring photo identification (ID) and prenatal card.

3. Ask if nuchal translucency (NT) is done at that site.

Book 2nd-trimester morphology (weeks 18–24)

Detailed fetal anatomy scan¹². Book between weeks 18–22 when possible.

Before booking (2nd trimester)

1. Referral must say 2nd-trimester morphology or fetal anatomy.

2. Bring 1st-trimester report.

3. Pick a date inside the window; save time and address.

Private insurance

Usually: call a credentialed clinic with your referral and book an available slot — not the same flow as public care.

Public system — Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS)

Varies by city: booking at your prenatal unit or referral to an imaging service¹². Ask your team where to go.

3rd trimester

Only when clinically indicated¹. Date comes from your referral.

Common mistakes

• Referral without trimester → wrong appointment slot.

• 1st-trimester scan does not replace 2nd-trimester morphology².
